JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES

WOULD GOD REALLY USE AN EARTHLY ORGANISATION?

IF SO …..

IS HE USING THE GROUP KNOWN AS JEHOVAH'S WITNESS AND THEIR LEGAL ORGANISATION KNOWN AS THE WATCHTOWER BIBLE AND TRACT SOCIETY?

The above questions you will find debated on the net.

Mostly, I assume that readers of these pages believe in the Bible as Gods Word and are looking for factual answers to which course of life to follow. I also assume that they have many questions regarding the Bible and who represents what it has to say. This information is provided so that you can become more fully informed about the organisation known as The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society as well as the religion that this society represents Jehovah's Witnesses, and, for you to make a balanced decision.

This page is STRICTLY produced from a PRIVATE point of view. I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses and here, I explain why I stay with this organisation regardless of the mistakes that they have made.

If you have travelled around on the net, you will have come across numerous pages about Jehovah's Witnesses. Some of the information you will find is, about changes in doctrinal teachings, so called prophecy (I call it "so called" because it depends on if you call it prophecy or interpretation), difference in personalities, and the strife this has caused.

Most of what you read is downgrading to that organisation. I have found, in reading a lot of these sites, that, the information they contain is not accurate, or, they fail to present the full picture. Generally, you find that they try to explain what they think we believe, but when what they say is examined, they really have no idea as to what we do believe, so what they say is extremely misleading.

I would like to give another side to the story so that you, the reader, can determine for yourself what you want to believe. It is hoped that YOU can weigh the evidence yourself as to what opposers of this organisation are saying has any real foundation, or, if they are people who have had their pride badly damaged and are just trying to stir up trouble, or have some other ulterior motive.

To start, some have made the claim that the word ORGANISATION does not appear in the Bible so no organisation is needed today.

DEFINITION OF THE WORD ORGANISATION

All the dictionaries that I looked at, in essence, say that an organisation is a group of people doing something in common in an organised way. Doing things orderly. To arrange or being arranged in an orderly manner. Look up several dictionaries yourself, to see what they have to say.

This essay will not degrade any of the sites that speak against Jehovah's Witnesses. That is NOT the purpose of these pages. My intent is to give some positive information to people interested in Jehovah's Witnesses or for Witnesses that are confused about what they have read at other sites.

I will let the Bible be the measuring stick by examining examples to demonstrate what kind of people that our creator used in days gone by and if he, infact, ever used organised groups.

Whenever I examine any subject to do with the Bible I always try to keep a few things in mind.

Rom 15:4 tells us that all things were written for our instruction

2 Tim 3:16 we are told that all scripture is inspired from God and beneficial for teaching….

Heb 6:13 It is impossible for God to lie

Armed with these texts, I always go back to the very beginning to see what Gods word has to say on a subject from the start. I am not going to deal with all examples, just some main ones to illustrate my point, as there are too many examples to include here.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT INTENDED TO TAKE THE PLACE OF PERSONAL RESEARCH AND STUDY. THE INFORMATION BELOW MAY SERVE AS A STARTING POINT FOR YOU AS IT IS NOT AN INDEPTH STUDY.

IN THE BEGINNING

What do we know about our creator? We are told at 1 Corinth. 14:33 "For God is [a God], not of disorder, but of peace." (NWT) "God is not one who likes things to be disorderly and upset. He likes harmony, …" (Living Bible). To start to see how true those words are, all we need to do is look at creation to see how orderly that is. Especially if we raise our eyes to the heavens and realise as the Psalmist did Psalm 8:3-4 "When I see your heavens, the works of your fingers, The moon and the stars that you have prepared," as well as Psalm 19:1 "The heavens are declaring the glory of God; And of the work of his hands the expanse is telling" and Psalm 75:1 "Men have to declare your wondrous works" (NWT). The heavens are so precise and organised that we humans set our clocks by their movements. Does that not tell us that he likes order?

What about with us? The Bible makes this comment at 1 Corinthians 14:40 "Let all things be done decently and in order." (JKV). Again we are told by Paul under inspiration that God likes things done in an orderly fashion.

So how does that relate to the human family? Is it possible then, that our creator wants his subjects to be organised and to do things in an orderly manner?

From Adam down until the nation of Israel come out of Egypt, the order of "rule" was a patriarchal system. When Gods people came out of Egypt, they were a nation of 6 million or so. The system of "rule" changed. Lets take a trip through history to see how things were "organised" and the difficulties.

ADAM - MOSES

When Adam and Eve were on earth, life was very simple. There was only the two of them. There was no great need for "organisation" as we know today, but still things were organised. There were given this command at Genesis 1:28 "Further, God blessed them and God said to them: "Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth and subdue it, and have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and every living creature that is moving upon the earth." and at Genesis 2:16-17 "And Jehovah God also laid this command upon the man: "From every tree of the garden you may eat to satisfaction. 17 But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die."

This may not seem much, but it was organisation. They were not just placed on earth and left to see what would happen. They were given a job to do and told what they could not do.

They chose not to keep their one and only "do not". They used independent thinking from that of their creator and lost life, and paradise for all of us.

NOAH, as a patriarch, was commissioned to build an ark for himself, his family and animals in order to survived the deluge. Jehovah gave that commission to Noah, and not to all his family at different times. Noah conveyed that message to his family. That too was simple organisation. The same situation applied to the other patriarchal families mentioned in the Bible eg Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The patriarch was the head or leader of those small "organisations".

The conclusion I draw from such examples, is that right from the beginning of human history, Jehovah has done things in an orderly fashion, even though it was on a small scale.

MOSES - KINGS

By the time of MOSES, things had some what changed. From dealing with family groups, there was now a considerable nation to deal with.

Moses was spared from death at birth, because it was Gods intent that Israel was to be freed by Moses. Forty years before Jehovah had planned to have the Israelites released from Egypt, Moses decided that he would try to have the nation freed from bondage. His intentions were honourable but it just was not time. In his feeble attempt, he killed a man. (Ex 2:11-15; Ac 7:23-29)

His hast and his murderous action did not exclude our God from using him. Moses had lessons to learn. While in Egypt he was instructed in all the knowledge of that country. Infact he became powerful in both words and deeds (Ac 7:20-22)

What did Moses have to learn? "The qualities of patience, meekness, humility, long-suffering, mildness of temper, self-control, and learning to wait on Jehovah needed to be developed in him to a higher degree, in order for him to be the fitting one to lead God’s people. He had to be groomed and prepared to endure the discouragements, disappointments, and hardships he would encounter, and to handle with loving-kindness, calmness, and strength the multitude of problems a great nation would present." (italics added) (it 2 p 435). From being a man that was powerful with words, he was now the meekest of all men on the earth. (Num 12:3). But, now he did not want to be used to free Israel.

At this point, we'll skip some time, as most people are aware of what happened.

The Bible tells us how the Israelites and a vast mixed company came out of the land of Egypt. Was this an organisation? Consider what the word organisation means. (see definition above)

Moses was their go between (mediator), between God and the nation of Israel. For a while (besides having Aaron as his spokes person) he had sole control over the affairs of this nation. Later he was urged by his father in law to appoint chieftains to help solve problems. (Ex 18:5-7) (Ex 18:13-37)

Moses was still their leader, but now there was on order of doing things, (priests and chieftains) to use our language, an organisation.

Some of the people had difficulty recognising the channel that God was using. For forty years they roamed the desert wilderness due to the nation listening to men and not to what God had to say. (Nu 13:2, 3, 8, 16, 25) Even thou there were problems amongst their company, they were still God's People.

In time even chieftains (appointed men) started to speak up against Moses, become independent thinkers. I've copied a section from it-2 p184 "During Israel’s wilderness trek Korah rebelled against the authority of Moses and Aaron, doing so in league with the Reubenites Dathan, Abiram, and On, as well as 250 "chieftains of the assembly" or "men of fame." (Nu 16:1, 2) They contended that "the whole assembly are all of them holy and Jehovah is in their midst," asking, "Why, then, should you lift yourselves up above the congregation of Jehovah?" (Nu 16:3-11) Moses later sent to call Dathan and Abiram, but they refused to be present, thinking Moses had no right to summon them. (Nu 16:12-15) Korah, his assembly, and High Priest Aaron were told to present themselves before Jehovah, all supplied with fire holders and burning incense.—Nu 16:16, 17.

The following day Korah and the 250 men with him, all carrying fire holders with burning incense, stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron. Jehovah’s glory appeared to all the assembly and God spoke to Moses and Aaron, telling them to separate them selves from the midst of the assembly, "that I may exterminate them in an instant." However, Moses and Aaron interceded for the people, and God then directed Moses to have the assembly get away from the tabernacles of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. This was done. (Nu 16:18-27) Shortly thereafter, "the earth proceeded to open its mouth and to swallow up them and their households and all humankind that belonged to Korah and all the goods." They and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol, and the earth covered them over.—Nu 16:28-34."

So Korah and his friends started to think independently from Jehovah's arrangement just as Satan did in the early part of mans history, and just as Adam and Eve did when they listened to Satan. The results were catastrophic.

There are many other example of Gods people (or some amongst their ranks) rebelling against organised procedure. But for now, back to Moses.

After being in the wilderness for some time, he (Moses) overstepped his authority by taking the credit for supplying water for the people. Because of this action, Moses had to be accountable for what he did. He was not allowed to enter the Promised Land, but he WAS NOT removed from his position of responsibility. (Nu 20:1-13; De 32:50-52; Ps 106:32, 33).

Jehovah had set up a way for things to be done (in our terms an organisation) and those that stayed by this arrangement entered the Promised Land.

The conclusion that may be drawn from the above is, Jehovah appointed an imperfect man (Mosses and later Joshua) to lead his people. Changes in the arrangement were made at times. Some of his people refused to stay by the arrangements (organisation) made, but God continued to use Moses and to stand by his people.

DAVID

DAVID showed great respect for Jehovah's organised arrangement. By the time of David, the nation of Israel had gone through several changes. After they had settled in the Promised Land, the people were governed by Judges. A Priestly system was in place for the spiritual upkeep of the nation. David was the second king for the nation. Saul was the first. Yes, Jehovah had organised his people into a solid nation.

When David was still very young, before Saul was dethroned by his death on the battlefield, he had been anointed as King designate. Saul, as the dully-appointed King, had gone astray after he began to think independently from Gods arrangement. "Saul’s sin consisted of his presumptuously going ahead with the sacrifice and not obeying Jehovah’s commandment, which had been given through his representative Samuel, to wait for Samuel to offer up the sacrifice. (Compare 1Sa 10:8.) As a consequence of this act, Saul’s kingdom was not to last.—1Sa 13:1-14." (It-2 p 871)

When you read through the accounts it soon becomes clear that David respected Gods arrangement for things. Saul was out to kill David. David had opportunity and motive to kill Saul. David, however, recognised that it was not his place to make Saul step down from being King and to put himself in place (even though he WAS king designate to replace Saul). He waited on Jehovah to do things in his time. If you are not familiar with these accounts, the following reading may be advised.

1 Samuel 18:1-30; 19:1-18. 1 Samuel 26:1-25; 27:1-7; 31:1-6; 2 Samuel 1:26; 3:1-21; 5:1-10; 1 Chronicles 11:1-9.

David's kingship was not all-smooth sailing either. You are no doubt familiar with the account of David and Bathsheba recorded for us in 2 Samuel 11:1-27; 12:1-18; 1 Kings 1:1-48.

Yes David did receive some punishment for this act. (notice, though, that he did not receive the death penalty as the law required, God showed mercy). He was not removed as king, and, he was given the privilege of penning parts of the Bible.

Conclusions that can be drawn from this, is, David was an imperfect man that God used in overseeing his earthly arrangement (organisation). He (David) made a dreadful major mistake (that is mentioned above) but God continued to use him and give him a great privilege of writing parts of the Bible and of being a forefather to  Jesus. So his very public mistakes DID NOT DISQUALIFY him from being used by God.

THE APOSTLES

The Apostles bring us into the first century Christian Congregations. Here we will see many examples of men being used by God making mistakes, arguing amongst them selves, and jumping to conclusions ahead of time.

A good place to begin is at John 6:48-68. This is a good example of staying by something that we do not understand. In part the account reads "51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread he will live forever; and, for a fact, the bread that I shall give is my flesh in behalf of the life of the world. 52 Therefore the Jews began,….. saying: "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53 Accordingly Jesus said to them: "Most truly I say to YOU, Unless YOU eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, YOU have no life in yourselves. 54 He that feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has everlasting life, and I shall resurrect him at the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 He that feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood remains in union with me, and I in union with him.. …. 60 Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said: "This speech is shocking; who can listen to it?" 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them: "Does this stumble YOU?." 66 Owing to this many of his disciples went off to the things behind and would no longer walk with him. 67 Therefore Jesus said to the twelve: "YOU do not want to go also, do YOU?" 68 Simon Peter answered him: "Lord, whom shall we go away to? You have sayings of everlasting life;" (italics added)

Jesus had been teaching something that went right against what Jews believed, the drinking of blood and the eating of human flesh. This was quite detestable for them and as can be seen above many stoped following Jesus after they started to think independently instead of waiting for an answer. Verse 61 tells us that even his disciples were murmuring against this teaching. At this time, Jesus did not disclose to them the meaning of what he had said. It served as a TEST to his followers as to who would stay and who would go. Even though they did not understand what Jesus was on about, the 12 decided to stay because they recognised that TRUTH was coming from Jesus, even though they did not understand it.

The Apostles were curious about when some events would happen. This curiosity can be seen in the following readings.

Wanting to know about when Jesus would be present again.

Matthew 24:3 " While he was sitting upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately, saying: "Tell us, When will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?""

Asking about restoration of the Kingdom

Acts 1:6-7 " 6 When, now, they had assembled, they went asking him: "Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?" 7 He said to them: "It does not belong to YOU to get knowledge of the times or seasons which the Father has placed in his own jurisdiction; " (italics added)

Both these  examples highlight that it is our desire to know things in advance. We as humans appear to be inquisitive enough not to be satisfied with the present.

The text in Acts is particularly interesting for two reasons. First, when we read through the Gospel accounts, there are many references there where Jesus explains to his apostles that he is leaving them, going his way to his father in heaven, yet, despite ALL THAT THEY HAVE HEARD, they still believed that his Kingdom was going to be established on earth at that time, and, this is just before he ascends to heaven. So, there were things that Jesus taught that took a long time for his disciples to grasp the meaning of. You could almost imagine them in conversation amongst themselves trying to discuss what Jesus was talking about, and at times being confused.

Secondly, notice the last part of this text "…seasons which the Father has placed in his own jurisdiction; ". (italics added) Does this not tell us that there are items that we should not worry about too much, because our God will deal with them in HIS OWN TIME. But still this did not stop speculation on the part of the Apostles. Our inquisitive nature wants to know. In daily life you may be able to think of many situations where others want to know of details that, at that time does not belong to them to know about. Why should things have been any different for the Apostles or us today?

But isn't printing something about what might happen being a false prophet? That is what opposers of Jehovah's Witnesses say. Is there any Biblical examples we can look to, to see if anyone that God used ever "false prophesied"?

There is an example that involved our good friend Peter (now here is some one we could write a whole lot about). He miss understood (in other words interpreted wrongly) some information that he received straight from Jesus. He miss understood exactly what it was that Jesus was trying to say to him and he spread a saying (if you read this carefully he is prophesying, that is saying something will happen) to "among the brethren" (JKV) Lets read the account

John 21:20-23 Upon turning about Peter saw the disciple whom Jesus used to love following, the one who at the evening meal had also leaned back upon his breast and said: "Lord, who is the one betraying you?" 21 Accordingly, when he caught sight of him, Peter said to Jesus: "Lord, what will this [man do]?" 22 Jesus said to him: "If it is my will for him to remain until I come, of what concern is that to you? You continue following me." 23 In consequence, this saying went out among the brothers, that that disciple would not die. However, Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but: "If it is my will for him to remain until I come, of what concern is that to you?"

Interesting example of coming to the wrong conclusion is it not? Now was Peter denied being used by God. No he was given the Keys to the Kingdom and the privilege of seeing the first Gentiles baptised as well as writing two books of the Bible.

If you do some of your research on Peter, you will see just how imperfect he was and the trouble he caused at times. But he was still used.

  1. Conclusions that we can draw from the first century is, many imperfect humans were used. As you study that portion of the Bible, you will see council given on religious divisions, backbiting, immoral actions, racial divisions and a host of other serious problems. Just read through the first letter to the Corinthians as an example. In spit of all this they remained Gods Congregation, his peoples, his earthly organisation.

SUMMARY

I have hardly scratched the surface of Bible examples of men and organisations that God used in the past. Remember they were written for OUR EXAMPLE to LEARN from. You will find examples of others that were severely punished for doing less than some of the above mentioned people.

What it comes down to is, God is just. He knows what is in our hearts and what motivates us. He has also told us what we need to do for salvation (I will develop a more in depth discussion on salvation later on another web page at this site). He knows when people make mistakes if they are doing it for their own glorification (as is the case of Saul mentioned above) or if they truly have a repentant and humble heart(eg. David and the apostles).

But what if we do not understand or agree with what the WBTS says, should we not be able to make up our own mind?

Well the WBTS can not and do not control what we think, so if our personal study turns up something different we should develop the same attitude as David, and the Apostles as shown above and wait on Jehovah to sort things out in his own time. As in the time of Jesus, it can serve as a test for us, as to if we are going to follow Satan, Adam, Eve, Korah and his companions as well as other example and start thinking independently of Jehovah's arrangement. If some view may differ, sit on is as it were and do not spread contention in line with 1 Corinthians 1:10 NWT. "10 Now I exhort YOU, brothers, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that YOU should all speak in agreement, and that there should not be divisions among YOU, but that YOU may be fitly united in the same mind and in the same line of thought." ( Italics added.)

The Bible clearly indicates that our Creator has used IMPERFECT people with ALL their faults and good points to be his representatives. So we should NOT be LOOKING for an organisation that is perfect. It just does NOT exist.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO THEN?

Today there are many groups of people who CLAIM to be representing our creator. Our job is to determine which group is our creator favouring. When we look at ALL the different organisations of people around we will be able to pick fault with them ALL. What will help us determine which group, despite their imperfections, we should attach ourselves too if any.

First lets be reminded of what John 17:3 NWT: says "This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge (that they know thee:RS) of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ." (Italics added.) (the word knowledge used here is discussed on my other page)

We need to get to know our God. This includes, amongst other things, knowing what his purpose is for the earth, What did he intend to do with mankind when he put us here?, Why is there so much suffering on the planet?, Why dose he permit it to continue?, Why did Jesus come to earth?, Who is Jesus, God or God's son? What does God say is mankind's future, life here on earth or life in heaven? Would a God of love have man suffer in a Hell?

These are just some of things that we NEED to KNOW about our God. I am not going to discuss them here. If you require more information see the my end of this page for links or e-mail address.

Does our Creator expect something from us? 1John 2:17 tell us we HAVE to do HIS will "but he that does the will of God remains forever" ( Italics added.)

We need then, to determine what the will of God is, and, who is doing it.

As Christians we should be endeavouring to follow Jesus. What was it that Jesus did?

John 4:34 "Jesus said to them: "My food is for me to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work." ( Italics added.)

When Jesus was here, he had a work to do. In brief, it was to try to get the nation of Israel to return to true worship and accept him as Gods King Designate of Gods Kingdom. Without going into all the text here, Jesus main message was the establishment of Gods Kingdom. Do some research and see how many times this subject comes up in his ministry. He also set a mission for his followers to spread the message of Gods Kingdom (Matt 24:14)

We need to believe in that kingdom, have faith in it and obey the commission and requirements that were laid down by Jesus

Eph. 2:8, 9, RS: "By grace ["undeserved kindness," NW] you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God—not because of works, lest any man should boast." (Italics added.)

Heb. 5:9, RS: "He [Jesus] became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him." (Italics added.)

Jas. 2:14, 26, RS: "What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead." (Italics added.)

Acts 16:30, 31, RS: "‘Men, what must I do to be saved?’ And they [Paul and Silas] said, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.’" (Italics added.)

One way to help us do the above is mentioned bellow

Hebrews 10:24-25 NWT "24 And let us consider one another to incite to love and fine works, 25 not forsaking the gathering of ourselves together, as some have the custom, but encouraging one another, and all the more so as YOU behold the day drawing near" (Italics added.)

Not to forget the most important aspect of true religion and that is what Jesus said at John 13:35 NWT "35 By this all will know that YOU are my disciples, if YOU have love among yourselves"

As Individuals, we all fail at that many times (Peter is an example of this), but what about as a global brotherhood. Which group of people are a true global brotherhood?

LET ME ILLUSTARTE THE SITUATION

First, I read somewhere that "Truth Never Changes, Only Mans Perception Of It Does". How true these words are. The article where I read this used the illustration of the earth and the way man has perceived it. No doubt, we have all heard of the views many ancient civilisations had of the earth. eg Being flat, held up by elephants riding on the back of a giant turtle swimming in an endless sea.

Even though the Bible, many centuries ago, told us that it was a circle hanging on nothing, the church of the middle ages used to describe people as heretics (thus deserving of death) if the tried to tell others that the earth was not flat.

Without going into great details here, just think of all the scientific "truths" that have changed as man gains more knowledge.

YES, with out a doubt, as KNOWLEDGE increases our perception of a subject changes.

Can the same be said about the Bible? I think so and I will tell you why.

When the King James Version was first translated into English from the Masoretec Texts for the Old Testament and the Received Text for the New Testament. A reasonable knowledge of the old languages was available for comparisons. Now, just think of the amount scholars now know about those old languages, with all the discoveries in old documents that have been found since 1611. For example, the Dead Sea Scrolls. The more information that scholars have the better they are able to understand the usage of words. The increase in understanding of the language can change the meaning in some places.

We know how the English language has changed in the last few decades. Consider the word 'gay'. A while back, it meant 'happy', now, it has very strong sexual meaning. Tell a young person today that something is 'wicked' and to them that means very good.

So the more information and examples that scholars have of the usage of words, the clearer an understanding we get as to what was meant, and in this last century more documents has come available to discern the common usage of various word.

Here is the way I view the Bible and the responsibilities the teachers of it have.

To me the Bible can be likened to a beautiful an intricate work of art in the form of a sculpture on display. Now we can stand back and admire it from afar, when we do that we get the general idea of the work. If we do that, though, we want really appreciate the intricacies and details of the work. Yes we may have an idea of what the artist was trying to portray but not fully understand the whole work. Depending on where we stand in relation to the work we will may well see something different to others looking on. Now if we stand still that is all that we will see.

On the other hand, if we want to learn more, we will get in close and really start to examine the finer detail. Besides getting in close, we would want to move around the work to see it from different perspective's. As we do this and start to examine closely, some minor details will change. If we had the responsibility and privilege of explaining that work to others, what our audience would hear from us is the changes that we see as we see them.

This idea is expressed in Ephesians 3:18-19 NWT "in order that YOU may be thoroughly able to grasp mentally with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of the Christ which surpasses knowledge, that YOU may be filled with all the fullness that God gives." (Italics added.)

What I am trying to say here is, to get the full perspective of the Bible including " the breadth and length and height and depth" we can not sit still. We have to continue to progress, this increases knowledge, and thus some ideas may change. If you want to condemn the WTBTS for keeping on the watch, that is up to you. But if this information has helped you get a different perspective then act accordingly.
